Contains the following types of materials: photographs, postcards (36), photo albums, original art. Covers the following wad: Vietnam War. Contains photographs of the following military units: 517th Parachute Infantry Regiment; 101st Airborne Division. General description of the collection: The Melvin Zais photograph collection covers only the last 20 years of his career from colonel to general. The Vietnam photos are useful if one is seeking illustrations of top level command rather than ground forces fighting. There are numerous photos of Camp Eagle, headquarters of the 101st Airborne Division. Most of the rest of the photos are of General Zais's visits to various stateside military posts: Fort Benning, Fort Campbell, Fort Rucker, and Fort Buchanan in Puerto Rico. There are numerous photos of visits and dinners in foreign countries --Italy, Turkey and Germany. Tere are also numerous photos of his tenure as director of operations (J-3), Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff 1970-1972. there are photos of his family, two sons who served in the Army while he served and numerous photos of Zais with his second wife who accompanied him on his many visits and social affairs. Unfortunately there are no photos dealing with his career as a junior officer.
